About this deal

Wild Willy, 58036 Audi Quattro Rally, 58037 Opel Ascona 400 Rally and 58039 Willy's Wheeler all use the same gearbox. But the Wild Willy has a different gearbox plate and a 15T pinion. The other cars use 18T. If you post what you know of pinions - tamiya number reference, car name, number of teeth and pitch, also the Tamiya part number (if you have it) - I'll add it to this post & make a note of where the credit is due As a footnote, a prototype version of the Wild Willy, which can be seen in an "action" pic on the Body Set box and in a least one Tamiya Catalogue, didn't have any sort of perforation. I did try to split the diff but one of the two directly opposing screws doesn't release so I guessed something inside is broken? Wild Willy 2's designers have been up until the wee hours of the morning putting the final touches on this exciting stunt vehicle.

You mentioned earlier that your Wild Willy has near new tyres - this alone is reason to look after it and not let the kids destroy itGear pitch will be one of two types imperial (diametral pitch, aka diametrical pitch, dp or simply pitch) - mostly found on US and UK made cars - e.g. Associated & Mardave; or metric - module or mod - mostly found on Japanese made cars - e.e Tamiya.

The Grasshopper 380 motor: 10T/0.8 mod -standard fit is pressed/shrunk onto motor shaft; 540 motor: 18T/0.8 mod; mad brushless: use 10T midnight pumpkin / lunchbox 10T/0.8mod gear & gearbox fittings (Thanks Jonny Retro) The "what pinion do I need for _x_" question seems to be a recurring one - and there's not much information about, especially on what pitch pinions need to be ... I thought if we collated what we do know for sure, it might help. The Wild Willy is the first "Stunt vehicle" made by Tamiya, i.e. it could do wheelies. The first in a great row of "fun" vehicles including the Audi, Opel, Lunchbox, etc. The motor is a special for this model? Any old 540 won't fit? That's surprising to me. I'll leave it well alone if that's the case.Never one to miss an opportunity for "Willy" jokes, I thought I'd write up an article on the differences between the various incarnations of the Tamiya Wild Willy RC jeep. IBIFTKH pretty much sumed it up already, but now I know first hand from actually having built the chassis...
