About this deal

It’s rare for a referee in any sport to be popular, yet Nigel Owens has always courted strong affection throughout the world – loved by the players, coaches, officials, TV commentators and even fans. Owens says he was too blase about the match, turned up with the wrong attitude and what happened was his fault, not the young player's. A real character, some of his famous put-downs whilst lecturing players, such as ‘This is Not Soccer’, have become huge social media hits. We use the industry leading internet payment company PayPal to protect your card details and protect from fraud.

Of 'This Is Not Soccer', he tells Wales Online in an interview about the book: "I remember coming back into the dressing room to be told by my TMO, 'What you said was hilarious Nige, everyone is loving it'. On the occasions I’ve received horrible abuse on social media, the messages of support and love from ordinary, decent people helped me carry on when there might have been occasions when I even thought of packing it in. Suddenly, a couple of policemen appeared, wearing those pointed helmets, and started racing after him. Coupled, of course, with those epic on-pitch lectures to players which ended up becoming social media sensations.

Not apparently written with the expectation of a wide audience, enjoyable but could have used another draft | I enjoyed this to the four star level, but I have to be honest that the writing quality is two stars, so an easy balance at three overall.

A fascinating read detailing Nigel's early life, his progression through the refereeing ranks, a reminder of his struggles with accepting being gay and and the high esteem he is clearly held in throughout the game. As does his love for his parents, and for the west Wales community where he grew up and so much more. Fair to say it is a particularly eagerly awaited piece of work as Owens' story is simply like no other. But it is Owens' back story, an attempt to commit suicide in his mid-twenties and then having the courage to come out as gay in the macho world of rugby, which helps make him such a high-profile figure. With his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union having come to an end in 2020, he is free to reveal all about his career since his previous autobiography, ‘Half Time’, to speak his mind on various issues and to give the full story of his last Rugby World Cup in 2019.We will never actually see your bank or credit card details, they are passed in a highly secure way directly to PayPal for processing. He was without doubt the best referee of his era, taking charge of the World Cup final, 100 Test matches, a record number of Six Nations games and also seven European Cup finals. I think some of the continuous emphasis that none of the viral moments were said with that as the goal could have been edited out. His pride in how locals in his home village have rallied around and taken delight at Owens' achievements comes across loud and clear in the book.
