About this deal

Jason Reynolds is an author I discovered last year and I have yet to pick up a book by him I haven't loved.

He is on faculty at Lesley University, for the Writing for Young People MFA Program and lives in Washington, DC. By doing so, the reader can only wonder how the lives of these loved ones might have been different if they had had this wisdom bestowed upon them while they were alive. In the novel Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds, Will, the main character, has been taught to live by the rules: don't cry, don't snitch, and take revenge. He lives on the 7th floor and the entire book is set in the lift as it travels from his floor to the ground.Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned. Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds, revolves around the main character Will, his family's history of vengeance, and Will's attempt to follow the rules on his quest for revenge. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! This is one of those books where you can”t explain the premise to anyone you just have to live and breath it, my daughter recommended it as she is training to be an English teacher and this book is on the curriculum, I can fully understand why, such powerful imagery and thought provoking way to tell the story, amazing!

Shawn, Will's deceased brother enters last; he doesn't speak to Will, but cries, breaking the rules which emotionally moves Will. This was a powerful lecture with some certain messages about life choices, presented in an exceptional way. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. I wanted to focus on supporting as many new-to-me black authors as possible in February, and Jason Reynolds was at the very top of my list. Will learns how each of the ghosts is connected with the rules, as they express surprise, sadness, skepticism, or regret at Will's plan. This is perfection, everything is extremely well done from the narrative to the page design, after reading this you will definitely see some changes in your point of view when it comes to the discussions brought up by the author. These encounters challenge Will to evaluate his choices and reconsider his actions before he makes a choice he can never change. Long Way Down is a novel written in verse that tells the story of fifteen-year-old Will who seeks to venge his murdered brother Shawn.

I would’ve loved to have seen this story fleshed out a bit more; most of the pages have only 10-20 words printed on them, and I just think that, had this been written like most verse novels, where there was a solid paragraph or two per page, it would’ve carried the impact across so much better and would have meant that much more. Some readers may not like having to do the "work" but when the elevator opens and Shawn asks Will, "Are you coming? He has a chance to step out of the cycle of revenge but the reader can see how hard a decision it is for Will as he descends. We’ve suggested some books that can help those going through tough times, and which are also excellent reads for everyone. He’s succeeded in his aim by a million degrees: this is one of the most exciting books written for young people or anyone. Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.

Long Way Down has won numerous awards, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature, a Walter Dean Meyers Award, a Newberry Award Honor, and a Coretta Scott King Award Honor. It has such a strong, raw, message that the impact stayed with me, long after the book had been finished. Books can help teenagers to process sad feelings, especially when they find it hard to talk to adults. Will knows that if someone does not vindicate their loved one's death, they are considered disloyal, and betray the memory of their loved one. She has a Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, and English from Gordon College and a Master's degree in Special Education from Salem State University.
