About this deal

Faithfulness" is often compromised in adaptation (for good or for ill) for the sake of reconfiguring the story to audiences beyond those the work was originally intended. I’m sorry but if you can’t be bothered to read the source material you plan to pay homage to (or blatantly rip-off) then I can’t be bothered to read your book. It's a sequel slash spinoff that could honestly be set in an entirely different universe and it would make no difference, which is why I won't touch the "she didn't read the Odyssey" thing. That’s what’s great about them—they have those layers of depth that can be unpacked when you read them again.

And we heard a bit about your criticisms, but what other things did you find weren’t so great about it? To access your ebook(s) after purchasing, you can download the free Glose app or read instantly on your browser by logging into Glose. Or maybe to NOT have Leto swear up and down she doesn't love Mathias and loves Melantho a chapter before AND AFTER she ends up in his bed?the part that’s crazy is that she states that “mythology has bypassed YA” even though she claims reading a lot to “keep on top of market trends. I absolutely loved Melantho’s story and how she fell in love with Leto, who was one of the twelve maidens sacrificed to Poseidon by Prince Mathias of Ithaca. As a professor of literature, I do understand why this admission would be upsetting to some, seem lazy and appropriating to others and even wreak of privilege to still more. And she has the audacity to insert the existence of women (lesbian/bi/ and straight) in a space that was never designed for them, give them agency, and tell a story where she, and others like her in this century, can see themselves.

Why show Leto learning about her new powers when you could just give us a two paragraph training montage and have her master them?anyway, that should solidly debunk the “last 3 or 4 years” claim—there’s plenty in classical Greek authors too—read Sandra Boehringer for fuck’s sake. The plot could have been solved within one day since the arrival of the girls, and there was no reason for it not happening because the characters couldn't possibly have been presented as selfish or get any sort of development that would lead to the obstacles in the beginning and their disappearance by the end.

Individually the characters were not written with enough characterization and depth to support their own chapters. I didn't find I particularly bonded with any of the characters, the bit I enjoyed the most was the power of the water and the intimacy and bond between the girls and the sea. But one girl wasn't willing to go without a fight, and the curse she enacts on Ithaca will cause thousands more deaths, for generations to come. The writing style and narrative voice alone has me enthralled, and I thought it an accomplished debut. As for the setting and the retelling, there are names from the Odyssey, stories and myths from it, but the story could be set anywhere.

For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. I’m never going to get direct experience of living in Ancient Greece, but you learn about interpersonal relationships at university, which you can adapt and lift and put into your novels. It’s funny some people always assume I’m doing Classics or English, and I say, ‘I don’t know anything about Classics, I Googled everything! I bought this book because I had tickets for a joint author event and wanted to read both before I went. Given the sheer volume of contrived information, I don’t understand why this was not a second world fantasy.
