About this deal

Enid Blyton is one of the world's best-selling children's authors with sales of her books in excess of 500 million copies. Anyway, as for the actual plot: When Jack and Lucy-Ann come to stay with Philip and Dinah at Craggy-Tops by the sea, Jack has it firmly in mind that he simply must go to the Isle of Gloom, a small island obscured by a haze of mist. One last thing — Mrs Mannering's first ever words to her future husband, Bill, are rather amusing from an adult perspective. Jack doesn't seem to mind at all that his younger sister Lucy-Ann tags along with him wherever he goes, and he's generally quiet by nature.

It was directed by Anthony Squire and stars Norman Bowler as Bill, Wilfrid Brambell as Uncle Jocelyn and Eleanor Summerfield as Aunt Polly. The only answer I can think of is that phone lines can be run over ground with straightforward telegraph poles, while electricity supply uses bigger pylons and water would mean digging underground, but it does still seem odd that they’re so remote but still have a phone. Aunt Polly, who looks "tired and faded," is over-worked and struggles to make ends meet, causing her to be sour-tempered.

But it's true – there's no mention of Joe being black in this recent edition, although he has rolling eyes, lined skin, and very white teeth. Philip and Dinah aren’t orphans, only half-orphans – their father is dead, and their mother sends them to stay with various strangers and relatives, because she’s a Modern Woman who has a job as an advertising executive of some kind. It’s also great when Bill takes them into town in his car and they bump into Jo-Jo who cannot fathom how they got there.
