About this deal

Now I take my time, moving them around, positioning them for the perfect bite to pop open the shell, then carefully separating the seed from it with my tongue, then—and this is the hard part—keeping the little seed safe in the space between my teeth and tongue, I spit the shells out. It kept me engaged and it was enthralling to read from the perspective of Ghost (Castle Cranshaw) , about his thoughts and choices made which were closely linked to his circumstances and past events. Ghost was my favourite character, but I didn’t like it when he stole the shoes because that is naughty and he could have ended up in jail.

He thinks, “If this went like the movies, I was either going to score the game-winning touchdown (which is impossible in track) or . This is the first book in the Track series: What conflicts do you think Ghost is going to face in the next book? When I'm not reading, I also like knitting, crafty things, baking, eating, walking, taking photos, watching traumatising medical dramas and nurturing a close relationship with my sofa and blankets. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons -until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medallist who sees something in Ghost: crazy natural talent. I have a couple favorites this year (like most years), but this one is almost always the first I mention. This is a book that actually made me tear up, and there aren’t a lot of middle grade books that do that. Well, not really talking to himself, but just repeating character names and plot lines he thought of on the train, over and over again, because he’s afraid he’ll forget it all before he gets home. But he's not just running toward the finish line, he's running away from his past and the anger he's got buried inside. Whilst people have particular perceptions of what kind of person he is, his own self worth and expectation that he will be let down are also a major theme in this book. But when he wanders onto a field where a track team is training, Ghost proves he has what it takes to run with the best of them.

There’s been a monumental push for increased diversity in children’s literature in the last few years. Can Ghost harness his raw talent for speed and meld with the team, or will his past finally catch up to him? So I check that out for a little while like it’s some kind of movie: The About to Pass Out Show, starring stair-stepper person one through ten.Without thinking about it twice Ghost beats the guy on the track, running on the outside, which gets the attention of the coach. His debut picture book, There Was a Party for Langston, won a Caldecott Honor and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor.

And that’s when I looked back and saw him, my dad, staggering from the bedroom, his lips bloody, a pistol in his hand. That’s easier said than done when Brandon Sanderson is in your face every day at school, you can’t forget your painful past, and when you want a new pair of trainers so badly you’d do anything to get them. I loved that Ghost isn't perfect but that the consequences take a while to show up (not as didactic as some middle readers can be. Jason’s many works of fiction include When I Was the Greatest, Boy in the Black Suit, All American Boys (cowritten with Brendan Kiely), As Brave As You, For Every One, Miles Morales: Spider Man, the Run series ( Ghost, Patina, Sunny, and Lu), and Long Way Down, which received both a Newbery Honor and a Printz Honor. When I served on a yearly committee of librarians in New York I’d notice that some books were difficult to get anyone to read.Right at the beginning of the book, when Coach is trying to convince Ghost’s mom that he should be running, Ghost realizes that he’s in a situation that’s played out in loads of sports films. I had such high hopes for this book to be a companion read to The Crossover by Kwame Alexander with my 6th graders. When Coach asks Ghost’s mother to let him join the team, Ghost reflects, “I felt like I had seen this in every single sports movie I had ever watched. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team—a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together.

Of middle-grade education professionals and middle-grade novel enjoyers, I am definitely in the minority of this one. Ghost, otherwise known as Castle Crenshaw, is a boy on the run, a kid who runs fast and doesn’t look back. Coach snatched the towel from his shoulder, folded into a perfect square, and set it in the space between us. Every other night he would become a different person, like he’d morph into someone crazy, but this one night my mother decided to finally fight back.Charles, who, by the way, looks just like James Brown if James Brown were white, has been ringing me up for sunflower seeds five days a week for about, let me think… since the fourth grade, which is when Ma took the hospital job.
