About this deal

Contrary to what Tommy thinks, she decides they must hide him – and Sally, tough, resourceful, sharp as nails, knows how to fight to get her way. My only concern is that there are some lengthy, graphic descriptions of animal cruelty in the story, which are upsetting even for an adult to read.

So when Sally tells Tommy about the wounded Nazi airman in the woods Tommy is persuaded not to report it but to help Sally keep him hidden. They hide him, from the Home Guard, the leader of whom is a man who fought in WW1, and has become bitter and twisted. Tommy knows that Sally’s a bit wild and her stories of her past rather unreliable, but what is she hiding? Bookwagon loves this splendid novel, set in the spellbinding Cumbrian countryside over a Cuckoo Summer of 1940. But then they find a German airman, he'd parachuted out of a plane that was coming down in Woundale.

Cuckoo Summer is a perfect book to share alongside WWII topics, and it will be loved by any child looking for an immersive story of adventure and friendship. Tulloch's obvious love for the Lake District and its wildlife also breathes through the pages of the story, which are filled with incidental descriptions of nature and its integral part in the characters' lives, and of course the sound of the cuckoo that echoes through its pages. They soon come to realise that reporting this discovery might not be the wisest idea in the midst of 1940 and instead they try to keep him hidden.Birdsong fills these pages, and I’ve also let the book ring with the music of Geordie and Cumbrian dialects. A great addition to the genre, carefully crafted, and bringing great gusts of Lakeland hill farming with it .

It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. The characterisation is strong: it's not just Tommy and Sally who have back stories that plausibly inform their actions. Andersen Press) Although Tommy’s holding in his worries about his missing father, his aunts are aware of his feelings. An interesting and nostalgic look at sheep farmers and countryside history, as well as quite a page turner for this young audience. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! When the two friends find an injured German airman in the woods, they face a dilemma about what to do next. Given that Earle wrote WHEN THE SKY FALLS, one of my favourite wartime stories, as well as the more recently published WHILE THE STORM RAGES, which I also thoroughly enjoyed, my expectations were high. Set in a Lake District farming community in 1940, the story follows the adventure of two children, local boy Tommy - who tells the story - and Tyneside evacuee, Sally.
