About this deal

The first release in Craigellachie's Cask Collection is a 13-year-old single malt that was initially matured in combination of refill and re-char ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished for just over a year in Bas Armagnac casks from northernmost Gascony, France. Craigellachie was not a bottle that I was really aware of before going on a virtual tasting, where I got to try this as well as a lovely sample of Angel’s Envy.

The bourbon casks bring vanilla, toffee and fudge notes to the fore, and the sherry casks provide richness and complexity. It’s also a heavy spirit in that it is thick and oily even at the standard official bottling strength of 46% ABV. It takes up the whole rear label, almost, and even includes a handy wee illustration of the worm tub itself, for effect. Initially, the whisky matures in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks before undergoing a resting period of just over a year in Bas-Armagnac casks. The scarce presence of single malt Craigellachie beyond independent bottlings makes this a splendid resurgence, gracing our glasses with its exceptional presence once more!DISTILLERY CHARACTER: Craigellachie is an unapologetic and distinct whisky, robust and muscular in flavour with a hint of pineapple.

Gold debossing and shoulder bands really make this whisky feel like it’s straight out of the roaring 20s - it wouldn’t look out of place inside Gatsby’s drinks cabinet, that’s for sure. Our eco-friendly approach doesn't compromise on protection, ensuring your items are safe during transit.Craigellachie 13 year old is a great introduction to the distillery style, it is a bold and distinctive whisky, at this age the tropical fruit flavour comes across as ripe banana.

I’m reassured that it’s non-chill filtered by the statement on the label, but there’s nothing to say if it’s coloured. Where the Fiddich meets the Spey, and the district’s main roads cross, between Dufftown, Aberlour and Rothes, the village of Craigellachie has a bridge designed by the great Scottish engineer Thomas Telford, a cooperage and two distilleries. Craigellachie has a full yet aromatic character that has made this Single Malt a prized Malt for blending since the late 19th century. This review has me wondering if all the dozens of times I’ve written “banana” or “rotten banana” in a tasting note if I was actually reacting negatively to the (quite common) flavor/aroma of sulfur. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. It’s all caramel waves intermingling with sharper fruit notes for a while before a tropical, coconut pineapple thing appeared but left before I’d really taken it in. Craigellachie Whisky Single Malt is produced in a distillery designed by Charles Doig, a famous distillery architect of his time.
