About this deal

The lives of the women was the interesting part of the story but again it didn’t offer anything particularly new and exciting. With a number of unlikeable characters that are complicated and deemed as troubling, it was hard to cheer for any of them.

I think I might have held on to the counter, just there, on the left-hand side, when you come into the cabin. A truly satisfying, multi-layered maze of a mystery with a cast of flawed characters so real I'm still thinking of them days after I turned the last page. She had to lift the (always surprisingly, unpleasantly heavy) cassette out of the little toilet at the back of the boat, carry it through the cabin and out onto the towpath, and from there a full hundred yards to the loo block, where the waste had to be tipped out into the main toilet and flushed away, the cassette rinsed out to clear whatever remained. The various characters and their backstories were interesting, but the reason for the crime still escapes me: I really had to suspend my disbelief to accept the summing up. It’s clearly a case of murder, so for the police it’s now simply a case of identifying who had both the opportunity and the motive. Each of us are a bit of unreliable narrators of our past, or, I should say we “color” our past to reflect what we want. The characters were deliciously complex and utterly authentic and that is what has stayed with me the longest - their voices, their fragility, their distinct stories. When I think back on this book, there was one character who said something that if it was not said might have changed quite a bit of the book.

A Slow Fire Burning is an atmospheric, suspenseful, psychotic thriller that will have you gripping the edge of your seat.Eyewitness by another houseboat resident, Miriam leads to a young girl Laura, who seemingly had a very disturbing past and childhood resulting in her unpredictable behavior. A Slow Fire Burning is a hugely satisfying, brilliantly crafted novel about the entanglement of betrayal and retaliation, the damage of loss, and how tragedy reverberates in ways we can never expect. From the first sentence to the last, this explosive , startling novel grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Other readers have said they thought the twist at the end was great, but it fell completely flat for me.

This was a very dark story as a whole, and I don't even know that the murder mystery in itself was what I was most intrigued by; the characters however were another thing! Published in over fifty languages, it has been a Number 1 bestseller around the world and was a box office hit film starring Emily Blunt. We begin to learn more about him, his unhappy and caustic relationship with his mother, his aunt Carla and others, but don’t really understand him even at the end. Angela’s sister, Carla, and Carla’s ex-husband, Theo, never recovered from the death of their three-year-old son Ben 15 years ago when he was in Angela’s care, and the two-one punch of these deaths is a painful reminder of Ben’s. But her newest thriller, A Slow Fire Burning, may be the one that haunts readers long after they’ve finished it.The combination of intriguing mystery and fleshed out and equally intriguing characters was superbly executed and really elevated this rating for me. I found that I ended up putting the book down for a while whereas her others I didn't want to put down.
