Clynelish 14 is a highly approachable Scotch that balances complexity and smoothness with a harmonious blend of fruity and spicy flavors and rich maltiness. It’s an excellent choice for those who appreciate bourbon and want to explore the world of Single Malts while still enjoying some familiar flavors.

Clear worts and long ferments start the process, while distillation involves maximising copper conversation –unusually, but not uniquely, Clynelish’s spirit stills are larger than its wash stills. The Glenfiddich 14 is a smooth Single Malt Whisky that combines the unique flavors of Glenfiddich with some of the familiar bourbon notes, including vanilla, caramel, and charred oak. It has been ages since I tasted the Clynelish 14 Years. It’s a classic if there ever was one, even though it always manages to stay below the radar. Clynelish is the sort of distillery you usually arrive at a little later in your whisky journey. But once you’ve had a sip it is hard to forget the waxy, coastal, mineral notes that this distillery is known for. It’s an ideal option for everyday sippers and represents an upgrade from younger Aberlour expressions, as it has a more refined and substantial profile. Finish: Medium in length, with slight pepperiness, salted caramel and some hints of candied lemon peels.The distillery was not a success in its early years. It only began to build a reputation in 1896 when blenders Ainslie & Heilbron bought it in partnership with John Risk, who was to become the outright owner in 1912. By the end of the century it had become the most highly-priced single malt When tasted, the peat is immediately present but not overwhelming, followed by flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and a subtle touch of oak. The Balvenie 14 has a rich, fruity taste from the influence of the Caribbean cask, which blends perfectly with the traditional whisky flavors. So here you go, I bought a bottle with the sole purpose of giving this Highlands single malt the place it deserves. It should have been part of the Classic Malts of Scotland in my opinion. The foreshots and feints from the spirit still are collected in a receiver and then briefly added to the low wines in the spirit still charger. Because of the comparatively long time the liquid sits in the low wines and foreshots and feints tanks prior to being mixed to create the spirit still charge, you get a build-up of waxiness.” Douglas Murray, Diageo’s Process Development Manager

What exactly makes a classic whisky classic? Longevity? Consistency? Wide consumer appeal? Competitive pricing? It would be hard to create a definitive list of the classics – styles vary greatly, as do personal tastes. But, perhaps there are some talismans that most malt enthusiasts would agree are archetypal or even timeless? Lagavulin 16 year old and Laphroaig 10 year old both spring immediately to my mind – well regarded bottlings that you’ll see just as commonly on the shelves of a local pub as you would in a specialist whisky bar. But, just taking expressions which have broad cross-over appeal would be a very narrow view of what might be a classic whisky. Risk worked in close co-operation with DCL and the blending firm of John Walker & Sons and, when the latter was folded into DCL in 1925, Clynelish came too. It closed in the 1930s, but produced small amounts of spirit during the Second World War. This is simply one of the best widely available core range whiskies. A timeless profile, good depth and complexity, and some unique touches. A benchmark everyday dram: in times when it’s easy to spend € 150 on a mediocre whisky, it’s great to come accross such value for money. Not a single harsh note or overwhelming warmth is to be found, making for a completely satisfying dram that goes down all too easily.This is an excellent choice for those who enjoy rum, as it offers a delicious profile reminiscent of rum. This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. It’s especially the waxiness that make Clynelish stand apart. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just get your hands on a bottle of Clynelish 14 Years (it’s worth it), and you’ll recognise the flavour profile I’m referencing soon enough. It’s a characteristic that seems to have been much more prevalent in earlier eras, but something you’ll rarely encounter in modern single malts, Clynelish being one of the few exceptions.
